Phillipe IV Sword, 14th C (based on XIV model) The c. 1300-50 swords place of origin is unknown, but Oakeshott believes it to be Chartres Cathedral in France. It is now a part of Musee de lÂ’ Armee in Paris. The hilt of iron (cross and pommel) is plated with gold. On the blade is a finely lettered inscription, “NULLA DE VIRTUTIBUS TUIS MAJOR CLEMINTIA EST” which means “Nothing of your virtues is greater than clemency.” As per Oakeshott, this is a kingly sword as the form and construction matched that of a sword made c. 1340 for Edward III. It is known that Philippe IV, le Bel, probably deposited this sword along with his armour to the Chartres Cathedral in 1308 in gratitude for his victory in battle at Mons en Pouille. DeepeekaÂ’s replica comes complete with a scabbard, has a full tang, and is heat treated to a Rockwell of 48-52.
