The modal m1840 Cavalry Saber was adopted by the US Army to replace the first Cavalry saber they had adopted; the M1833. The 1833 Napoleonic Era British sword had earned a bad reputation for being to flimsy and the US Armies heavy cavalry came to only rely on it for cutting butter. The overwhelming dissatisfaction of the m1833 led the US Ordnance Department to field-test Prussian, British and French swords for a replacement. The French Saber was the overwhelmingly preferred and so began the birth of the m1840 Cavalry Saber “Old Wristbreaker”.
Made for The US Cavalry
The 1840 Cavalry Saber was built with a heavy flat-backed and deeply curved blade. From horseback this sword could deliver a very effective and devastating slash. This modal is forged with a thick and well tempered 1065 high carbon steel blade capable of holding a very resilient edge. After wielding this saber you will quickly appreciate where it has earned its famous nickname. This is an authentic reproduction of these famous swords of the highest caliber. These are favored by collectors and re-enactors for their authenticity but make no mistake, these swords are forged to the same standards of the originals by experienced professional sword smiths and will perform as such. The model 1840 has a three branch brass guard, brass wire wrapped black leather grip, and comes with a steel scabbard.
