The cutlass, sword of the seas favoured by navy and pirates alike, was also used by some land infantry units but is best remembered as a sailor’s sword. The cutlass was a shorter sword frequently used by officers as a close quarters battle weapon and may be known by some as a cuttoe which is derived from the french “couteau”. It was also referred to as a “hanger” until the 1800’s, then adopted the name cutlass amongst sailors.
